Last Saturday I toed the line for my 7th race and 6th ultra for the year. The @bonditomanlyultra 80km. We set a finishing time window between 10 - 12hrs. Yes, it was a wide window. Whilst I physically felt recovered from the 100km ultra I did 7 days before, it was unknown as to how my body was going to respond.
It started off great, felt strong. From about 20km I could really feel the effects of the week before. My strength and energy were ok, but nowhere near peaks levels. The weather was very favorable, which certainly helped. My mindset was to enjoy the race and finish as strong as possible. Mentally I was in a really good place.
Thanks to my awesome crew, I finished in 11hrs 3mins. Certainly not fast, but it was an event we were using in preparedness for the penultimate race of the year. Next Friday I’ll be taking on the @gpt100miler in the Grampians, Victoria. Arguably one of the toughest, technical 100mile races in the world.
As an adaptive athlete, I may have a physical disadvantage. However, as a result, I have a mental advantage. Nothing will break me. I will not quit.
I’m going to be giving it everything. LFG!

Rodney and Chris’ Thoughts
Community. Community connects us as humans. It provides a sense of belonging and support and is essential for our physical and mental wellness.
Being part of something you believe in, working towards a common goal and making a positive impact to people around you can be rewarding.
A strong community starts with the bond of families and friends, which is the cornerstone for a thriving society.
Think of gyms, park runs, beach games, church, or any other social gathering and the support and nurturing for growth it brings.
People are meant to have connection and not just through devices and technology – being able to talk to one another face to face and be physically active as we’re made to move.
Quotes to Remember

"The highest good of a community is the common good." – Aristotle

Rodney has another short turnaround until his next race. In two weeks, he’s competing in the @gpt100miler trail race in the Grampians, Vic. This is arguably one of the toughest single-track, technical 100mile races in the world. It’s part of the @worldtrailmajors and is also a qualifying race for @hardrock100run 100 mile race in Colorado, USA.

That’s race no. 6, ultra no. 5 and 4th 100km ultra for the year...so far. And what an implosion it was. The @blackall100km trail on the Sunshine Coast was a key race on the calendar. It’s a qualifier for Western States 100Mile Endurance Run in California.
The race started well, on pace, stops at ASs were quick, fueling and hydration going to plan. Then we hit nearly the halfway mark at 49km and the wheels fell off. It was an incredibly hot day. Over 35°C with high humidity. This not only lead to energy being depleted, but it was difficult to take in carbs. Gels became a no-go, and I couldn’t stomach liquid carbs. The only source of carbs I was having were bananas and LCM bars. They’re simply not enough to maintain a decent pace. I pushed through to the next crewed aid station at 62km, to regroup, take on a @bodyarmour.au energy drink and go. It was here I learnt that it wasn’t only myself having issues. The support crew @run_tomfen had blown a tyre on the car and had to negotiate lifts to get to me. When it rains it pours, literally. As I left the 62km AS a thunderstorm came through. It was a slight relief to wash of the filth and heat of the day. It also made the trail nice and slippery.
We made it through to the 82km AS and from here it was head down to get to the finish. We did, not before getting in another quick thunderstorm for good measure.
This race was the closest I've come to throwing in the towel, mentally. Physically, I was ok. My head just was not in it. It was a real grind to keep pushing to get the job done.
Whilst the race certainly didn’t go to plan, there were still many takeaways. Shit will happen that is out of our control. It's how we respond in the moment which will determine the longer-term. We could have thrown in the towel when it got too hot. My support crew could have given up when the tyre blew, but they knew I was relying on them for fueling and hydration, so they problem solved and got the job done.
Despite the negatives, there were still positives. My hydration was excellent. Est sweat loss, over 11ltrs, which we put back in. And we crossed the line, uninjured. Quick turnaround for the @bonditomanlyultra in 2days.
For Tom 💔

Rodney and Chris’ Thoughts
Too often we tend to jump to our own conclusions without asking questions or being curious about someone’s action or a particular situation.
Being curious opens us up to learning something new, which leads to growth and can open your mind to what someone else is going through and why their actions are what they are.
Sometimes we follow other opinions or jump on a band wagon to reach conclusions without being aware of the full picture.
It’s important to be curious, ask questions, evaluate and understand before taking an approach or making a decision – we’re all built different and have different drivers.
In a time where we tend to be more divisive then ever and can get caught up in our own echo chambers, is imperative to be curious and open minded. Because you don’t know what you don’t know.
Quotes to Remember
“Be curious, not judgemental” – Walt Whitman (and Ted Lasso)
“I have no special talents. I am only passionately curious”. – Albert Einstein
What’s Happened?
Amanda “The Boss” @run_tomfen successfully defended her win from last year at @humeandhovellultra 100km on 11th October. She finished 2nd overall, just 6 mins behind the 1st place man, with a new PB of 11hrs 17mins. Whilst dominating the women’s race finishing 3hrs ahead of 2nd place.
Rodney has just finished his 6th race and 3rd 100km ultra trail race for the year. Two days ago he finished the @blackall100 km trail race on the Sunshine Coast. Whilst the day didn’t go entirely to plan, he got the job done.

‘The Boss’ @run_tomfen set out to defend her title at the @humeandhovellultra 100km. For the entire race it was back and forth between her and three men. Clear of the rest of field. It was a fast pace and it came down to ‘The Boss’ and the lead male with 30km to go. The lead male picked up a pacer at 70.7km and stretched out to a 9min lead. She managed to bring the gap back to 6min, with an incredible 2nd place finish overall in a PB time of 11hrs 17mins.
She finished just over 3hrs in front of 2nd place female.
This performance was only possible with the disciplined training she put in for months leading up to the race. Success and triumph comes through hard work and effort.
Not being biased but it was an outstanding job by the crew, with total stoppage time of 11mins.
The new strawberry-lime electrolytes from our awesome partner @bodyarmour.au kept the hydration up.

Chris @chrispaterson_53 does at least one challenge each year to put himself out of his comfort zone to test him physically and mentally – in 2025 it was to take part in his first trail race.
While he has run this distance before he hadn’t run this as part of an organised event with hundreds of other people.
Here's what he learnt from his race;
Setting yourself and preparing or training to complete a mission (goal) takes commitment. Not only physically for your body to get through the task, but also mentally to have the discipline to compete against yourself, to see the objective through.
Lining up to start an organised running event was intimidating for me.
People are clearly focused, have trained hard and are determined to give it their best.
The running community however all seemed very encouraging throughout the course.
Running trails is very different than running on the road.
Elevation is a killer and concentration is key. He nearly ate dirt a couple of times for not watching where his feet were landing.
He generally does a 10km road run in under an 1hour 10mins, so he set a target of less than 3hours.
He finished in just under 3hours and 8mins.
Hydration and fueling while running takes getting used to and needs to be incorporated into training.
His stomach felt off at the first aid station at around 9.5km, and he struggled to drink for the next 5kms. Replacing lost fluid and calories is difficult but necessary.
Success has a different meaning depending on who you are.
Some it’s to win, some it’s to earn, some it’s to get praise. For him it’s to learn and grow, which he did from this experience.
Don't be afraid to challenge yourself and create a pursuit to get better.

Rodney and Chris’ Thoughts
Commitment. Do your actions reflect what you say you’re going to do, and what you’ve committed to?
Too often we give lip service and say we’re going to do something but may not ever have the intention to.
“Let’s catch up.” “I’ll come back to you today.” “I’ll have it done for you by the end of the week.” How often do you hear something like this but are let down when the objective or response isn’t provided?
It’s very important to back up what you say, through your actions. If you commit to a timeframe, meet it. If you can’t meet it, communicate an alternative, and own up to being wrong as hard as that might be.
If you can’t commit to something, be transparent that you can’t. You’ll earn more respect by saying no, than by saying yes and not following through.
Commitment reflects your character, and this demonstrates your reliability to those around you.
Don’t reduce your standards and commit to what you say you’ll do.
Quotes to Remember
“Individual commitment to a group effort – that is what makes a team work, a company work, a society work, a civilization work.” – Vince Lombardi
"Soldiers, when committed to a task, can't compromise. It's unrelenting devotion to the standards of duty and courage, absolute loyalty to others, not letting the task go until it's been done." – John Keegan
