Rodney and Chris’ Thoughts
What do you do to grow and develop? Is it reading to upskill your knowledge? Is it training for something physical? Do you challenge yourself and put yourself in situations that are uncomfortable voluntarily?
We embrace discomfort and recognise that being in difficult situations either physically or mentally, or both, is good for growth.
When we do something that is uncomfortable, whether it’s through intentional action or forced upon us, we learn, grow and develop. It helps us prepare for future situations and times of difficulty.
Getting injured is a set-back. Rehabbing, recovering and regaining strength in response builds resistance. The injury is bad at the time, but longer term we’ll be better for it.
The same applies, when we deliberately and voluntarily take on challenges which test us physically, mentally and emotionally, the ego gets stripped back to reveal our true character. This is when we really grow.
You need to choose the hardest parts of your life. Don’t allow for them to, just happen.
Quotes to Remember
"Our whole life is set up in the path of least resistance.
We don't want to suffer. We don't want to feel discomfort. So, the whole time, we're living our lives in a very comfortable area. There's no growth in that.” – @davidgoggins
“The reason to deliberately do hard things is so that when non-self-elected challenges arrive (and they will), you can tell yourself: 'I don't know how this is all going to turn out, but I am certain I can do hard things'” – @hubermanlab

Rodney and Chris’ Thoughts
What makes an effective leader? What are a leader’s characteristics and how do they help those around them?
Leadership comes from people in different positions and from different backgrounds – you don’t have to be a CEO or a team captain to lead.
Leadership may come naturally to some, whereas others may develop their leadership through experience. There isn’t really a manual or playbook to teach how to lead. Leaders aren’t born, they are made. And just like anything else, they are made through hard work.
The most important characteristic is prioritising people you lead and then getting the best out of them. Leading by example, convey your work ethic, express the desire to support them and allow them to perform at their highest standard whilst continuously striving for them to be better.
Strong leaders listen and know they can’t be successful alone. They also know they don’t need to nor be capable of doing the role or job of everyone in the team. They ensure they have the most effective people in each role who are the experts and as a leader, bring these experts together to create the most effective and successful unit. They seek input and are always willing to learn.
Actions speak louder than words.
Quotes to Remember
"It is better to lead from behind and to put others in front, especially when you celebrate victory when nice things occur.
You take the front line when there is danger. Then people will appreciate your leadership.” – Nelson Mandela.
"Do you want to know who you are? Don't ask. Act! Action will delineate and define you". – Thomas Jefferson

Rodney and Chris’ Thoughts
How do you respond to pressure? Is pressure something you accept and work through or do you avoid it?
There is a direct correlation between responsibility and pressure. The greater the responsibility, the greater the pressure. When you have children, your responsibilities increase so does the pressure for you to raise them into adults. The leader of a nation has immense responsibility and immense pressure from the public at all times.
When someone wants that promotion, particularly when it involves managing and leading, that comes with responsibilities and certainly increases pressure. Because now, it’s not just you that you need to be responsible for, but a team.
However, it is not so true for the inverse. Having an increase pressure, does not necessarily mean there’s an increase in responsibilities. Most of the time the increase in pressure is self-imposed. Think about when you’re about to go on a holiday. You put so much pressure on yourself to make sure you have all your work completed and everything at home is sorted out. Your responsibilities haven’t changed.
Having structured processes, planning and preparation and putting in the hard work will assist handling the pressures faced. Draw on past experience and seek out support. You don’t have to put all the pressure on yourself, most times you will be able to draw on colleagues, family or friends to contribute.
Pressure will always be there, both internal and external. How you face it, will determine whether you crumble in a heap or rise to the top. Embrace pressure. Remember, diamonds wouldn’t exist without it.
Accept that pressure will come and that you’ll be better for it after working through what’s needed.
Quotes to Remember
"Don’t worry about the pressure or the responsibility, just live in it, have fun and when everything seems to be going right, just stay humble and remember your family.” – WWE Superstar Roman Reigns.
“Under pressure, you can win with your mind.” – Tiger Woods

The Enhanced Effort Podcast: Episode #013 – Pressure & Responsibility
“If you’ve got a strategy there, and you believe in that strategy, stick to it, work towards it.
There are times that you’ve got to make tweaks, depending on what you’re up against, see the strategy out.”
This week Rodney and Chris discuss:
• Movie vehicles and @netflixanz series @sec Any Given Saturday,
• Working to a strategy,
• The responsibility that comes with pressure and much more.

Rodney and Chris’ Thoughts
Preparation.
One of the biggest reasons for someone not performing is preparation.
Think of competing in a game, event, mission or giving a presentation and the amount of planning and preparation required to perform at a high standard.
Could you compete or present well if you don’t prepare? Maybe. Sometimes.
Would you compete or present at even higher standards if you had carefully and confidently prepared the best you can? Absolutely.
Professional athletes don’t just prepare for games on the training ground. They spend time in the weight room, they study footage of theirs and their opponent’s previous games, they dial in the nutrition and they look after the recovery. Preparation isn’t just about yourself, it’s also about knowing the competition and even where the game is being played. Knowing the battlefield.
Preparation will never guarantee success every time. There will be times when things won’t go to plan, however, together with putting in hard work it will giving you the best opportunity to perform.
Quotes to Remember
"By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail.” – Benjamin Franklin.
"You can't go out and practice average on Wednesday, average on Thursday, okay on Friday and then expect to play well on Sunday" – @tombrady
What’s Upcoming?
With three weeks to go until the @sydney_marathon presented by Asics, Rodney’s training has shifted from ultra trail for long endurance and elevation climbing, to fast, flat road running. Recovery from the previous race last week has been excellent.
