Rodney and Chris’ Thoughts
Awareness. How aware are you of yourself, others and what’s going on around you?
Having awareness enables you to think outside yourself, consider others perspective and heighten your senses of your surroundings.
Awareness increases attention to detail, which ultimately leads to making better informed decisions to take the appropriate action in a given situation.
Continuously fine tuning your awareness and not succumbing to distractions will free your mind, support your focus and enable you to have a competitive edge to meet your objectives.
Quotes to Remember
“Every human has four endowments – self-awareness, conscience, independent will and creative imagination. These give us the ultimate human freedom... The power to choose, to respond, to change.” — Steven Covey, American author and educator.
"The ultimate value of life depends upon awareness and the power of contemplation rather than mere survival." – Aristotle

The final race of the year is done. Starting Thursday 27th November, I got to compete in the @ultratrailkosciuszko – KosciMiler race in the beautiful Snowy Mountain, NSW. It has been another big year and coming off the back of a DNF at @gpt100miler it was important to finish on a high.
Going into the race, it wasn’t about times or positions, it was going in with the mindset to enjoy it, take in the scenery and to celebrate all the work put in throughout the year.
The thing about running 100miles through the mountains is there is nowhere to hide, there’s no shortcuts. It is going to physically hurt, strip you down emotionally and mentally. The only way to finish is to keep going.
From the 3am start on Lake Jindabyne to the finish at Friday Flat in Thredbo, 35hrs 55min later it was one foot in front of the other, with no other option but to cross that finish line. Being paralysed in one arm and having abductor muscles removed from my legs, is a physical barrier. But my advantage is the resilience I’ve built because of it.
Throughout the weekend the weather threw everything it had. Sun, heat, wind that was blowing people over, torrential rain, cold and even an electrical hailstorm.
Just like at GPT100 I thought about Tom, but this time it was different. He was my motivation. There was nothing that was going to prevent me from ringing that bell at the finish.
Thanks to my crew, Amanda @run_tomfen, for fuelling me and doing whatever it took to keep me moving. Ultra running is a team sport, there’s nothing individual about it.
162.4km and 6,578m of elevation gain, after going through Bullocks Flat, Perisher, Charlotte Pass, summiting Mt Kosciuszko, Guthega, Smiggin Holes, Thredbo Village and Eagles Nest, we crossed the line, rang the hell out of that bell and set an adaptive athlete course record.

Rodney and Chris’ Thoughts
Throughout 2025 Rodney has competed in several Ultra races and challenges.
From 27-29 November he embraced the hurt of the Ultra-Trail Kosciuszko by UTMB 100mile race through the Snow Mountains of NSW.
This was the longest time Rodney had spent continuously on his feet and throughout the race he had to draw on the fundamental pillars of performance to complete what he set out to.
He completed his mission and earned the adaptive athlete course record of 35 hours, 55 minutes and 50 seconds, a reflection of the hard work and effort taken to achieve this result.
The course started on Lake Jindabyne, then headed up to Bullocks Flat via the Trout Hatchery. From there it was all uphill to Perisher, before traversing across to Charlotte Pass to refuel, then climbing up to the summit of Mt Kosciuszko. After reaching the highest point of Australia, it was back down to Charlotte Pass Lookout, then over to Guthega. After completing an out-and-back section at the Power Station, it was back over to Perisher via Smiggin Holes. A long downhill section back to Bullocks Flat, before the final 31kms. Heading through Thredbo Village to climb up to Eagles Nest, then the home stretch down to the finish at Friday Flat, completing 162.4km and 6,578m of elevation gain.
Throughout the weekend the weather threw everything it had. Sun, heat, wind that was blowing people over, torrential rain, cold and even an electrical hail storm.
“If I can get out there and push myself to do it, think about what you can do.”

Rodney and Chris’ Thoughts
Drive. What’s your approach to closing out 2025? Are you limping to the finishing line or are you going to continue to push yourself to meet your goals and targets?
This time of year brings plenty of distractions. Christmas parties, festive drinks, Summer weather to relax or just experiencing end of year fatigue. It’s easy to make excuses and say, “I’ll finish it off next year.” Don’t be that person.
Don’t let the end of year be an excuse to slow down, if you’re tired, learn from this to take more breaks next time to be able to perform and stay disciplined to finish what you set out to. Maintain your standards.
Now is the time to use your drive, continue to push to complete your goals. If you’ve already hit your targets for the year, start planning now for 2026. Start the New Year is the strongest position you can, whilst others are slowly working their way into things. Make the most of the opportunity and dominate.
Enjoy the end of year catch ups with friends and family for sure, but don’t let yourself down if you still have targets to achieve.
Keep getting after them. Do you want to finish with success or regret?
Quotes to Remember
“There have been so many people who have said to me, 'You can't do that,' but I've had an innate belief that they were wrong. Be unwavering and relentless in your approach..” – Halle Berry, American Actress.
“Hard work beats talent when talent doesn't work hard.” – Tim Notke, US High School Basketball Coach.

Rodney and Chris’ Thoughts
Choice. We are constantly given several options or paths to choose from, or how to respond in order to achieve an outcome.
At times we’re all faced with setbacks or adversity and it’s how we respond that makes the difference.
If it’s an accident, do we play the victim or do we use it as fuel to not let the accident define me?
If there’s a problem in business, you get overlooked for a promotion or lose a job, do you sit back, make excuses and blame others, or do you use it as a learning experience to grow and improve? Turning adversity into opportunity.
Australia is a country that has plenty of options or choices to be made. There will always be setbacks but there will always be opportunities to adjust, move forward and set yourself up for an alternative option.
We choose the food we eat, how we look after our bodies, who we associate with, what we do with our time. These are all choices we can freely make.
What choice are you going to make?
Quotes to Remember
“I think life is a matter of choices, and that whatever we are good or bad, is because of choices we make.” – Lou Holtz, Former American College Football Coach and TV Analyst.
"Our lives are fashioned by our choices. First, we make our choices. Then our choices make us" – Anne Frank.

It’s been 9 days since the @gpt100miler. Thank you to everyone who has reached out. It has taken some time to work through and reflect on the race. I also had some sort of virus a few days afterwards.
Leading up to the race I was feeling physically the best I had all year.
The race started at 8am on Friday morning. The weather was in our favour and perfect to run through the Grampians. The first 50kms was both beautiful and incredibly challenging. I reached the aid station, regrouped, refuelled and took off for the next section. This is when everything changed.
Endurance sports, especially 100+ mile races are more of a mental feat than a physical one. Between kms 50 and 59 my mindset became completely overwhelmed.
We had kept this private, however a few weeks prior to the race we lost a member of the RRR team, Tom one of our English Bulldogs, passed away.
I had completed two races straight after this and thought I was mentally ready. Turns out I was far from it. The grief and constant thoughts consumed me. Normally when times got tough in a race I’d think of Tom and Fenway (our other English Bulldog) and look forward to getting home to see the boys. This wasn’t going to happen and I mentally could not continue.
There’s one final race for the year, @ultratrailkosciuszko 100Miler in just under two weeks. I’m unsure whether I’m ready to go but I’m going to find out and turn up to the start line and do it for Tom. The Big Guy.
