Leadership
Rodney and Chris’ Thoughts
What makes an effective leader? What are a leader’s characteristics and how do they help those around them?
Leadership comes from people in different positions and from different backgrounds – you don’t have to be a CEO or a team captain to lead.
Leadership may come naturally to some, whereas others may develop their leadership through experience. There isn’t really a manual or playbook to teach how to lead. Leaders aren’t born, they are made. And just like anything else, they are made through hard work.
The most important characteristic is prioritising people you lead and then getting the best out of them. Leading by example, convey your work ethic, express the desire to support them and allow them to perform at their highest standard whilst continuously striving for them to be better.
Strong leaders listen and know they can’t be successful alone. They also know they don’t need to nor be capable of doing the role or job of everyone in the team. They ensure they have the most effective people in each role who are the experts and as a leader, bring these experts together to create the most effective and successful unit. They seek input and are always willing to learn.
Actions speak louder than words.
Quotes to Remember
"It is better to lead from behind and to put others in front, especially when you celebrate victory when nice things occur.
You take the front line when there is danger. Then people will appreciate your leadership.” – Nelson Mandela.
"Do you want to know who you are? Don't ask. Act! Action will delineate and define you". – Thomas Jefferson
