Pressure and Responsibilities

Rodney and Chris’ Thoughts
How do you respond to pressure? Is pressure something you accept and work through or do you avoid it?

There is a direct correlation between responsibility and pressure. The greater the responsibility, the greater the pressure. When you have children, your responsibilities increase so does the pressure for you to raise them into adults. The leader of a nation has immense responsibility and immense pressure from the public at all times.

When someone wants that promotion, particularly when it involves managing and leading, that comes with responsibilities and certainly increases pressure. Because now, it’s not just you that you need to be responsible for, but a team.

However, it is not so true for the inverse. Having an increase pressure, does not necessarily mean there’s an increase in responsibilities. Most of the time the increase in pressure is self-imposed. Think about when you’re about to go on a holiday. You put so much pressure on yourself to make sure you have all your work completed and everything at home is sorted out. Your responsibilities haven’t changed.

Having structured processes, planning and preparation and putting in the hard work will assist handling the pressures faced. Draw on past experience and seek out support. You don’t have to put all the pressure on yourself, most times you will be able to draw on colleagues, family or friends to contribute.

Pressure will always be there, both internal and external. How you face it, will determine whether you crumble in a heap or rise to the top. Embrace pressure. Remember, diamonds wouldn’t exist without it.

Accept that pressure will come and that you’ll be better for it after working through what’s needed.

Quotes to Remember
"Don’t worry about the pressure or the responsibility, just live in it, have fun and when everything seems to be going right, just stay humble and remember your family.” – WWE Superstar Roman Reigns.

“Under pressure, you can win with your mind.” – Tiger Woods

What’s Upcoming?
With two weeks to go until the TCS Sydney Marathon presented by Asics, Rodney’s training has had a bit of an interruption. Having to miss two training sessions due to a bit of a bug, has meant a change to his program. However, it just means having to adapt and keep working hard to get back on track.
