Accountability

Rodney and Chris’ Thoughts
Accountability. How are you held accountable for doing what you say you’ll do?

Do you have a friend group, colleague or family member that you can rely on and who will let you know you haven’t done what you said you would do?

Are you willing to do what it takes to back up what you say with action? It’s easy to say we’ll do something, but what happens when we don’t? What are the consequences? We don’t like letting other people down, but what is more important, is not letting yourself down.

Accountability is a value of Run Rocket Run.

This means taking responsibility for your actions and admitting a mistake when you haven’t delivered.

Taking responsibility and not looking for excuses or blame. Our ego gets in the way and makes excuses or comes up with reasons as to why a task hasn’t been completed. We feel like owning up to something is going to have a never-ending negative impact on our character. Trial and conviction by public opinion leads too many people to deflect or dismiss ownership for their actions, in order to avoid being accountable. But how does this genuinely reflect on your character?

People often say they will do something or make flighty statements but won’t deliver. Often, knowingly that they have no intention to actually follow through.

“I’ll definitely call you tomorrow.” “I’ll have the work completed by the end of the week.” “We should absolutely catch up.”

This is because, there is no accountability. There are no consequences. As society, we’ve accepted this. We’ve accepted to be let down.

Life throws curve balls and you may not be able to follow through but how you respond, handle the curve ball and take ownership and responsibility is important.

In the workplace, be proactive instead of reactive, come up with solutions or options before passing on the responsibility to someone else, show up with the right attitude consistently and be open to feedback. Take ownership.

Likewise, when training, complete the required reps when needed, run the distance you’re meant to without cutting corners.

Have the mindset that you’re not going to let yourself down and you’re going to complete the task with 100% effort.

Holding yourself accountable will drive higher standards, greater success and much higher levels of fulfilment in whatever you’re working towards.

At the end of the day, it’s you who you will ultimately let down, by not taking responsibility.

Quotes to Remember
“I took zero accountability for anything in my life. I was the kid that if you asked what happened, I immediately started with everything but me. And it took years for me to break that, like years of work, solid work to just like break that. It also has taken years of work for me to even forgive that kid.” — Jelly Roll, singer and songwriter.

“Accountability breeds response-ability.” – Stephen Covey, educator and author.
